30 Day Video Game Challenge: Day 1

So my friend Joey, who can be found at A New Game Plus, came up with the above 30 Day Video Game Challenge. While I’ll be participating in the challenge over on Facebook, I decided to share my brief responses on the blog as well. Feel free to join in!

Day 1: Favorite Video Game of All Time
If you’ve spent any time on my blog you might already know that my favorite game is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. On a whim, I picked up the Game of the Year edition on-sale in a Wal-Mart. I played it on my laptop meant for college work and was quickly absorbed. It was my intro to the franchise and my first Bethesda game. I loved Oblivion‘s world, the lore, and the ability to explore at will. While the game is clearly dated now—the combat is janky, the dialogue/voice acting can be rough, and the game has its bugs—it’s incredibly memorable to me for the level of exploration it offered, which I hadn’t experienced in gaming prior. Oblivion is also one of the few games where I look back fondly at the time spent with it and remember the context in which I played—playing it in the car and at the wooden desk in my room—and I remember the mental and emotional state I was in when I played. I can’t recall the same details for many games.
